Movie screening and discussion: Alaska-Patagonia, the Great Crossing

In the presence of the protagonists

In collaboration with the Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg, we invite you on an extraordinary journey with Sophie Planque and Jérémy Vaugeois!
Sophie Planque and Jérémy Vaugeois, a couple with a passion for mountains and geography, set themselves the challenge of cycling 28,743 km across the American Continental Divide over a two-year period. The Continental Divide lies at the heart of the American landmass: the Brooks, the Alaskans, the Rockies, the Sierra Madre and the dreaded Andes.

In search of the soul of the continent, it’s with the people who inhabit these mountains, with the mineral and sedimentary elements, that this couple experience a geography of extremes. More than a bicycle trip film, it’s an ode to geography, to the discovery of detail, to the understanding of relief, to a deep love for our planet.

“It’s a trip for lovers that’s more of a grand odyssey than a peaceful honeymoon. Sophie Planque and Jérémy Vaugeois have embarked on an adventure in XXL format. It’s an adventure full of emotions, memorable encounters and sometimes trying unforeseen events”. (Radio France)

“Floating cities” workshops

City of Tomorrow multidisciplinary project

As part of the City of Tomorrow multi-disciplinary project, the Ecole Privée Notre-Dame Sainte-Sophie and the Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer welcomed the illustrator Elsa Mroziewicz for workshops imagining floating cities…

The “Floating Cities” workshops, organized by the Institut français du Luxembourg at the École Privée Notre-Dame Sainte-Sophie and the Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer, aim to raise students’ awareness of sustainable development. Floating cities could be a solution to the rising sea levels caused by global warming.

The students met a children’s book illustrator, Elsa Mroziewicz, who presented her floating cities project and explained the various solutions that she and other literary and scientific contributors had devised to tackle the urgent issue of climate change.

The idea is to develop several floating cities across 5 continents on a fresco more than 10 meters long, featuring several augmented reality animations. This project, which is still in its early stages, will be presented at the UN conference on the oceans to be held in Nice in June 2025.

Several classes around the world (France, Brazil, United States, Taiwan….) will be taking part in the same workshop, and all the student’s work will be posted on the floating city website.

The students worked in small groups to design their own floating cities.

The hardest part was thinking about making the city self-sufficient. We had to take into account practical aspects such as supplying food and drinking water, as well as ensuring that it could be stable while floating.

These workshops are part of the multidisciplinary City of Tomorrow project, organized by the Institut français du Luxembourg, in cooperation with the French Embassy in Luxembourg and a number of Luxembourg partners, and with the support of the development company Agora, which specializes in the rehabilitation and development of former industrial sites.

Opening of the exhibition

« Jeux Olympiques – En route vers Paris 2024 »

This 2023-2024 school year will be devoted to a cultural sports programme, with a view to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games!

The Embassy of France / Institut français de Luxembourg, in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth, is offering Luxembourg secondary schools the opportunity to host an exhibition devoted to the history of Olympism, from its ancient origins to its current global influence: “Jeux Olympiques – En route vers Paris 2024″. Created by the Musée National du Sport in Nice and comprising 16 panels, this richly illustrated exhibition is a real educational resource for discovering the different facets of Olympism, its symbols and values, and the great athletes and leaders who have marked its history. The birth of the Paralympic movement, symbols, rituals and the social impact of the Olympic and Paralympic Games are just some of the themes explored.

The opening of the exhibition took place on Monday 25 September at the first school to display the panels, Vauban, Ecole et Lycée français de Luxembourg, in the presence of the French Ambassador, Claire Lignières-Counathe, and a number of VIPs including members of the Luxembourg Olympic Committee, representatives of the Victor Hugo Association, secondary schools and other guests invited to celebrate the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

In addition to this exhibition, the Institut will be offering a host of activities including conferences, shows and even a sports film festival entitled “Le sport fait son cinéma”.
