Run by a committee comprising representatives from the Institut français du Luxembourg, the French Embassy in Luxembourg and the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, the competition is being organised as part of the celebrations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the aim of promoting sport and the values of Olympism in Luxembourg.

This is a drawing competition, based on an artistic work, in the style of the painter Jean Jacoby, honouring one of the sporting disciplines competing in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The competition is open to a specific audience, on a voluntary basis. There are two school categories:

– Enseignement fondamental category: any pupil in cycle 4 of basic education, or equivalent, may take part.

– Lycée category: any pupil in the 3rd or 2nd year of upper secondary education in a Luxembourg secondary school, whether public or private, conventional or general, or the equivalent for other education systems, may take part.

The competition is open until 14 June inclusive, with registration possible until 7 May.

“After the creation of Maputo-Mozambique, I want to return to Africa and experience its gestures and musicality.

The plan is to create an artistic piece based on what I see as heterogeneous practices (sport and juggling-dance-music); to play with the qualities of Malian women basketball players and their sense of music, song and dance, and then to create a piece of juggling-music from that.”

For this 6th edition of the Prix Victor Hugo de la Francophonie, more than 75 budding writers were inspired by this year’s theme, based around the vocabulary of sport and its values, as part of the Paris 2024 Games!

The Prix Victor Hugo de la Francophonie was a competition for the best text in French, based on the 10 words of the “Dis-moi dix mots” operation, organised each year by the French Ministries of Culture and Education. Participants were invited to use the following words in their compositions: adrénaline ; aller aux oranges ; champion; collectif ; échappée ; faux départ; hors-jeu ; prouesse ; mental ; s’encorder !

This year’s eighteen winners, twelve prizes and three special mentions for the ‘lycée’ category and two prizes and one special mention for the ‘higher education’ category, received their prizes at a ceremony at the Résidence de France, in the presence of the French Ambassador, Claire LIGNIERES-COUNATHE, the Director of the Institut français du Luxembourg, Maxime Dafri, the co-presidents of the jury, Jean Portante and Ian de Toffoli, and the sponsors of the prize.

“Floating cities” workshops

City of Tomorrow multidisciplinary project

As part of the City of Tomorrow multi-disciplinary project, the Ecole Privée Notre-Dame Sainte-Sophie and the Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer welcomed the illustrator Elsa Mroziewicz for workshops imagining floating cities…

The “Floating Cities” workshops, organized by the Institut français du Luxembourg at the École Privée Notre-Dame Sainte-Sophie and the Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer, aim to raise students’ awareness of sustainable development. Floating cities could be a solution to the rising sea levels caused by global warming.

The students met a children’s book illustrator, Elsa Mroziewicz, who presented her floating cities project and explained the various solutions that she and other literary and scientific contributors had devised to tackle the urgent issue of climate change.

The idea is to develop several floating cities across 5 continents on a fresco more than 10 meters long, featuring several augmented reality animations. This project, which is still in its early stages, will be presented at the UN conference on the oceans to be held in Nice in June 2025.

Several classes around the world (France, Brazil, United States, Taiwan….) will be taking part in the same workshop, and all the student’s work will be posted on the floating city website.

The students worked in small groups to design their own floating cities.

The hardest part was thinking about making the city self-sufficient. We had to take into account practical aspects such as supplying food and drinking water, as well as ensuring that it could be stable while floating.

These workshops are part of the multidisciplinary City of Tomorrow project, organized by the Institut français du Luxembourg, in cooperation with the French Embassy in Luxembourg and a number of Luxembourg partners, and with the support of the development company Agora, which specializes in the rehabilitation and development of former industrial sites.
