French Courses

What types of courses does the Institut français du Luxembourg offer?

The Institut français du Luxembourg offers French courses for all levels, from beginner to advanced. Our programme includes intensive and extensive courses, conversation classes, as well as specialised training for professional purposes and certification preparation. Courses are also available for children and teenagers.

Classes are offered in groups or individually, both in person and online.

To secure your place in the course and help us organise the sessions, we recommend registering as early as possible. Ideally, registration should be completed at least three weeks before the start of the session.

If you do not have a language certificate issued by a language training organisation within the past 12 months, the IFL offers a placement test (€25).

The test assesses your level and helps us place you in the appropriate group. It consists of a short oral assessment (approximately 10 minutes) with one of our teachers via Zoom, along with a written assessment.

Our courses cover the levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

— C1/C2 for one-to-one French for Specific Purposes (FSP) courses.

60 hours of classes are required to complete a half-level.

Payment must be made by bank transfer before the start of the course. Payment details are provided in the training agreement and invoice issued upon registration.

The full amount must be paid before the course begins. Instalment payments are not available.

Depending on the type of course and the number of courses booked within a calendar year, you may be eligible for loyalty discounts, as outlined in our loyalty programme available on our website.

Unfortunately, we do not accept ADEM, OLAI or CAI vouchers.

Depending on the type of course, sessions may take place at different locations:

— At our IFL premises (47 Avenue Monterey, L-2163 Luxembourg) for most group classes (for children, teenagers and adults), as well as some private lessons upon request.

—At Athénée de Luxembourg (24 Boulevard Pierre Dupong, L-1430 Luxembourg) for Saturday morning classes and adult summer camps.

— At École privée Notre-Dame Sainte-Sophie (4 Rue Marguerite de Busbach, L-1269 Luxembourg) for certain extracurricular workshops.

— Private lessons can be held either at the learner’s home or at our IFL premises, according to the learner’s preference.

— At the company’s premises for corporate courses.

The registration fee covers the cost of the lessons only.

The cost of teaching materials is not included in the course fee. The teacher is free to select the teaching materials required for the course to run effectively (with an estimated additional cost of €20–€50). Your teacher will let you know which books and materials you will need during the first lesson.

If the course you have registered for does not match your actual level, we may consider transferring you to another course whenever possible. It is your responsibility to enrol in a course that corresponds to your actual level, following our recommendations.

Courses are organised for a limited number of learners and over a specific period. Therefore, no refund can be issued once the course has started, nor can a partial refund be granted in the event of missed classes.

Once payment has been made, no refund can be requested.

In this case, we will contact you to discuss the possible alternatives:

  • Switch to a different type of course
  • Postpone the course
  • Receive a refund of the fees paid by bank transfer, upon receipt of your bank details (RIB) issued by your bank. The refund will be processed within one month.

Learners are expected to take their personal commitments and any circumstances that may prevent them from attending a course into consideration before enrolling.

In the event of an occasional absence, a private lesson may be rescheduled (see below).

A group class cannot be rescheduled due to the absence of an individual learner. However, learners are asked to inform their teacher of their absence and are responsible for requesting the content covered during the missed class. Missed classes cannot be made up through another type or format of course.

Private lessons, with a minimum duration of 60 minutes, are tailored to your level and schedule. They can take place at our IFL premises or at your home (additional travel fees apply if you live outside Luxembourg City).

Under certain conditions, lessons may also be held at one of our partner institutions, such as École privée Notre-Dame Sainte-Sophie or Athénée de Luxembourg, or online via Zoom.

Your private lesson can usually be arranged within 5 days of your request, depending on our teachers’ availability.

Private lessons are a fast and effective way to learn a new language. They are tailored to your individual needs, whether you are learning for personal enjoyment, professional purposes or an academic qualification.

You are free to choose the times that suit you best and adapt your lessons to your schedule:

— In person – at our premises, Monday to Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

— Online – Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Private lessons can be rescheduled at no additional cost, in accordance with our General Terms and Conditions and the training agreement.

Lessons must be cancelled at least 48 hours before the scheduled date and time (from Monday at 9:00 a.m. to Friday at 2:00 p.m.).

In the event of a cancellation, a new date will be agreed upon. Rescheduled lessons can only take place during the term of the training agreement. Any other arrangement is at the sole discretion of the Institut français. In all cases, a maximum extension of one month from the date of the final lesson covered by the agreement applies.

In the event of a late cancellation (less than 48 hours before the scheduled lesson), the lesson will be charged.

No extension of the training agreement may be requested.

After three cancellations, the cancelled lesson will be charged and can no longer be rescheduled. For maximum effectiveness and progress, and to ensure continuity with the same teacher throughout the training, lessons should be attended regularly.

Our private lessons are flexible and can be rescheduled to accommodate holidays or illness, subject to the conditions above. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, a limited number of schedule changes may be permitted at no additional cost.

Our teaching team consists of around 25 freelance teachers, all of whom are carefully selected and qualified professionals.

All our teachers hold a recognised qualification in language teaching, including Master’s degrees in French as a Foreign Language (FLE), MEEF (Teaching, Education and Training), Language Sciences, or DAEFLE certifications. They are all qualified graduates with proven teaching experience.

We also provide ongoing in-house training to keep our teachers up to date with the latest teaching methods and educational innovations.

You can therefore be assured that all our courses are taught by highly qualified professionals, even though not all of our teachers are native speakers.

Fees cannot be refunded once the course has started, and no partial refund can be granted for classes that are not attended.

The Institut français cannot be held responsible for unforeseen changes in a learner’s circumstances that may prevent them from attending the course.

Yes. We offer group classes for a maximum of 8 learners per group, with participants grouped according to their level.

The IFL is not an examination centre, but we can provide effective preparation for French language certifications such as the DELF, DALF, TCF and other specialised examinations.

To take the DELF/DALF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française / Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française), please contact the Institut National des Langues (INL).

The DALF C1 provides access to French universities, as well as to an increasing number of European and French-speaking universities. With a DELF B2, applicants to French universities do not need to take the French language pre-admission test.

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is another certification that assesses French language proficiency. It is available in several versions, including the TCF Tout Public (TCF TP), TCF Québec, TCF DAP (Diplôme d’Admission Préalable) and TCF Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité (TCF IRN), which is used for French nationality and residence procedures.

The TCF DAP is intended for non-EU students wishing to apply to a French higher education institution. The examination can be taken at our IFL premises.

Professional French exams

The Professional French Diplomas offered by the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry are practical examinations focusing on spoken and written French in professional situations and across a range of sectors, including business, medicine, law, administration, science and tourism.

These examinations can be taken at INLINGUA Luxembourg.
